Play the major scale starting on your note, then the minor scale. One of them will sit inside the song without rubbing against it. Bright, open, settled songs are usually major; darker or more tense ones are usually minor. If both feel plausible, you have likely found a relative pair, and the chords decide it.

Reading the key from the chords
When you can see or play the chords, they often name the key outright. The final chord of a song is usually its home chord, and so, slightly less reliably, is the first. A progression's most frequent resting chord points the same way. Major or minor? The relative-key trap

When your answer and a tool's answer are a relative pair, neither of you is wrong about the notes; listen for where the bass resolves, and let that settle it.
