Why it is here
- Whitfield had Marvin Gaye sing in a higher key than his normal range, mixed in overdubbed vocals from the Andantes and the Funk Brothers, and added a string arrangement by Paul Riser and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, giving the recording its dense, layered sound. source
- The Gaye recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 for "historical, artistic and significant" value, and Rolling Stone placed it at number 80 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in 2004. source
- It topped the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969, simultaneously held number one on the R&B chart, and became the biggest-selling single on the Motown label up to that point. source
