Why it is here
- The song was reportedly written in 15 minutes and recorded in a single take, inspired by Doug Fieger's real-life romance with 17-year-old Sharona Alperin, who appears on the picture sleeve. source
- It was Capitol Records' fastest gold-certified debut single since the Beatles' 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' in 1964, and has sold more than 10 million copies as of 2010. source
- Drummer Bruce Gary's stuttering tom-tom-and-snare beat with an added flam was considered crucial to the song's success. source
