Why it is here
- Withers wrote the song after watching the 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses, drawing on its depiction of two alternately weak and strong alcoholics. source
- The repeated 'I know' in the bridge, sung 26 times, was left in on the advice of the session musicians rather than being replaced with more lyrics. source
- The track features Booker T. Jones producing and arranging strings, with Donald 'Duck' Dunn on bass, Al Jackson Jr. on drums and Stephen Stills on guitar, and it won the Grammy for Best R&B Song in 1972. source
