Momentum
This song has not appeared on a Rotation chart, so it has no score and no receipts. The rank history below is the ledger; a score is only published once the momentum run puts it on a chart.
Why it's here
Withers wrote the song after watching the 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses, drawing on its depiction of two alternately weak and strong alcoholics. [1] The repeated 'I know' in the bridge, sung 26 times, was left in on the advice of the session musicians rather than being replaced with more lyrics. [2] The track features Booker T. Jones producing and arranging strings, with Donald 'Duck' Dunn on bass, Al Jackson Jr. on drums and Stephen Stills on guitar, and it won the Grammy for Best R&B Song in 1972. [3]
In culture
Every place this record has lived. A solid chip states a fact and carries the citation that earns it; a dashed one is a connection somebody drew, and carries their name instead.
