Momentum

This song has not appeared on a Rotation chart, so it has no score and no receipts. The rank history below is the ledger; a score is only published once the momentum run puts it on a chart.

Why it's here

The intro's guitar harmony hook was worked out by Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek in a hotel room, becoming the song's signature musical moment. [1] The song's opening guitar riff was sampled throughout Janet Jackson's 2001 hit "Someone to Call My Lover," produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. [2] The lyric "purple rain" in the song has been cited by two newspaper writers as a possible direct source for Prince's later song, album, and film titles. [3]

In culture

Every place this record has lived. A solid chip states a fact and carries the citation that earns it; a dashed one is a connection somebody drew, and carries their name instead.
