Why it's here
Joel wrote the song as a deliberate attempt to create a pop standard, an ambition dating from his time covering traditional standards at a Los Angeles piano bar. [1] The idea came to him while literally riding a Greyhound bus along the Hudson River Line after returning home to New York from three unhappy years in Los Angeles. [2] Joel and Tony Bennett's 2001 duet version of the song received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 2002 Grammy Awards, and the pair opened that ceremony performing it live. [3]
