The song is based on Billy Joel's own experience working as a lounge pianist under the name 'Bill Martin' at the Executive Room bar in Los Angeles while trying to escape his contract with Family Productions. [1] It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013 and selected by the Library of Congress in 2015 for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its cultural, historic, or artistic significance. [2] The recording features a backing band including Wilton Felder on bass and Larry Carlton on guitar, alongside Joel's own piano and harmonica. [3]
