Joel wrote 'Vienna' after visiting the city and reflecting on his relationship with his father, using it as a metaphor for the value of old age. [1] Joel named it one of his two favorite songs of his own catalog in a 2008 New York Times article. [2] Its later popularity has been tied to its appearance in the 2004 film 13 Going on 30, which Joel and a MEL Magazine critic both credited for renewed interest, especially among younger listeners. [3]
