The song became a hit after being performed on the German TV show Musikladen in September 1976, going on to top several European charts and become Boney M.'s major European breakthrough. [1] Frank Farian sang all the male vocal parts himself, while Bobby Farrell only danced to the playback in performances. [2] Farian fought to make it the A-side over Hansa's preference for the group's cover of Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" after testing both tracks in his own discothèque. [3]
