The song's lyrics famously speculate about a self-absorbed lover, with Simon confirming actor Warren Beatty as at least one inspiration, and Mick Jagger contributed uncredited backing vocals to the recording. [1] It was nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 16th Annual Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. [2] In August 2014 the UK's Official Charts Company named it the ultimate song of the 1970s, and in 2021 it was ranked 495th on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. [3]
