Produced by Gus Dudgeon after Tony Visconti declined it as a 'gimmick,' the recording features orchestration by Paul Buckmaster, guitar by Mick Wayne, and Rick Wakeman on keyboards, who recorded his part in just two takes after hearing the demo once. [1] It was rush-released to capitalise on the Apollo 11 Moon landing and was used by the BBC as background music during its television coverage of the landing. [2] It was one of the first singles mixed in both mono and stereo, an unusual choice for radio singles at the time, reportedly at Bowie's insistence. [3]
