Why it's here

Bowie's performance of the song on Top of the Pops on 6 July 1972 launched him to stardom and was watched by future musicians including Siouxsie Sioux, Bono, Robert Smith, Boy George and Morrissey. [1] The song was written as a late, direct response to RCA's request for a single, replacing a Chuck Berry cover on the Ziggy Stardust album. [2] John Peel praised the single in his Disc & Music Echo column, calling it "magnificent" and warning that overlooking it would be "stark tragedy". [3]
