Why it's here
The song's gospel-style backing vocal arrangement was constructed by then-unknown singer Luther Vandross, with help from Robin Clark, and eagerly embraced by Bowie. [1] It marked a major stylistic pivot for Bowie into R&B and Philadelphia soul—what he called "plastic soul"—after years of glam and hard rock. [2] Bowie promoted the song with a performance on The Dick Cavett Show and later sang a medley with Cher bookended by the song on The Cher Show. [3]
