Written by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as a demo Tom Petty passed on, before Don Henley added the lyrics and vocals at producer Jimmy Iovine's suggestion. [1] Its Jean-Baptiste Mondino-directed black-and-white music video won Video of the Year plus Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards. [2] Don Henley won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for the song at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards. [3]
