The song was recorded with session musicians including pianist Paul Griffin, whose addition at the last minute was the moment the arrangement finally came together after two weeks of failed rehearsals. [1] In 2017, McLean's original recording was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". [2] At 8 minutes and 42 seconds, McLean's version was, at the time of release, the longest song to enter the Billboard Hot 100, and it held the record for the longest song to reach number one for almost 50 years. [3]
