Why it's here

McLean wrote the lyrics in 1970 as a tribute to Vincent van Gogh after reading a biography of the painter and deciding to argue that he wasn't crazy. [1] The song topped the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in 1972. [2] It was a favorite of Tupac Shakur and was played for him at the hospital where he was admitted just before he died of gunshot wounds. [3]
