Producer Glyn Johns had Bernie Leadon play double-time banjo on the track, a choice the band initially thought was 'bonkers' but which producer Johns said made the song different. [1] It is Eagles' debut single, co-written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey after Frey finished Browne's unfinished second verse about Winslow, Arizona. [2] Rolling Stone's Bud Scoppa called it 'simply the best sounding rock single to come out so far this year' upon the 1972 release of the Eagles' debut album. [3]
