Momentum
This song has not appeared on a Rotation chart, so it has no score and no receipts. The rank history below is the ledger; a score is only published once the momentum run puts it on a chart.
Why it's here
Radio programmers at CKLW in Windsor, Ontario turned it into the No. 1 song in the Detroit market through heavy airplay, which pushed other US and Canadian Top 40 stations to add it and drove it to No. 1 on the US singles chart. [1] Producer Gus Dudgeon built the illusion of a live recording by mixing in crowd sounds from a 1972 Elton John concert at the Royal Festival Hall and a Jimi Hendrix set at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970, plus whistles from a Vancouver show. [2] It gave John his first Top 40 entry on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and helped land him a guest appearance performing the song on Soul Train in 1975. [3]

Every place this record has lived. A solid chip states a fact and carries the citation that earns it; a dashed one is a connection somebody drew, and carries their name instead.

Every date here is the date the source chart covers, never the date we fetched it. Sources publish on different lags: the Spotify mirror runs about two days behind, TurnTable publishes weekly. One recording, one history: this table also counts the rows sources published under 2 other handles of this record (remasters, official videos).
