Why it's here
The song was inspired by Ray Bradbury's short story "The Rocket Man," about an astronaut whose work keeps him away from his anguished family for months at a time. [1] It is also known for being the first song in Elton John's catalogue to feature the signature backing vocal combination of Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone. [2] John performed a piano rendition combining "Rocket Man" with David Bowie's "Space Oddity" as a tribute after Bowie's death in January 2016. [3]
