"We Are the People" was released on 20 September 2008 as the second single from Empire of the Sun's debut album Walking on a Dream, and its long chart life rests on that catalogue standing rather than a 2026 release. [1] In May 2025 the song made Empire of the Sun's first-ever entry on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, debuting at No. 96 on the chart dated 17 May, after it was used as the soundtrack to TikTok clips — the most-watched of which shows a couple dancing to the song's bridge. [2] In the UK the track is the duo's best-known release, a 2009 Top 20 single, and it continues to appear in Official Charts Company chart data for the act. [3]
