The song was originally written for Labelle but they never recorded it, and Gamble and Huff instead gave it to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. [1] This recording features Teddy Pendergrass as lead vocalist, with background vocals from producers Gamble and Huff, Carl Helm, and Bunny Sigler. [2] The song was chosen as one of the "Songs of the Century" by the Recording Industry Association of America. [3]
