Why it's here
The song was recorded live at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, in August 1977 as the title track of Browne's live album. [1] It was featured prominently in the 1994 film Forrest Gump as the theme for a cross-country running montage. [2] Browne successfully pushed back against unauthorized political use of the song, suing John McCain's campaign and the Republican National Committee in 2008 over its use in an ad, resulting in a settlement and public apology. [3]
