Why it's here
George Weiss said he wrote the song specifically for Louis Armstrong, inspired by Armstrong's ability to bring together people of different races. [1] During the recording session, ABC Records president Larry Newton tried to halt the taping because he wanted a swingy pop song like "Hello, Dolly!" instead of this slow ballad, and was physically removed and locked out of the studio. [2] Armstrong accepted only $250 in musicians' union scale for the overtime session, ensuring the orchestra members were paid extra. [3]
