The music video was directed by Spike Lee and filmed on location in the historic center of Salvador, Bahia, and in the Santa Marta favela of Rio de Janeiro, drawing crowds of enthusiastic residents despite state officials trying to ban the shoot. [1] Jackson collaborated with 200 members of the Brazilian percussion group Olodum, whose samba-reggae rhythms feature on the track and whose global exposure from the video brought them worldwide fame. [2] A second, rarely broadcast music video was filmed in a prison and incorporates real footage of human rights abuses, including the beating of Rodney King and the Tiananmen Square crackdown. [3]
