The song features a spoken-word sequence performed by horror actor Vincent Price, who recorded his part in just two takes. [1] Its accompanying music video, directed by John Landis, has been called the greatest music video of all time by various publications, doubled sales of the Thriller album, and became the first music video inducted into the National Film Registry. [2] The song was written by Rod Temperton, who improvised the bassline and built a chord progression designed to escalate suspense like a stretching elastic band. [3]
