Why it's here

The song's closing lyrics, which name-checked Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, were written by Gregg Alexander as a deliberate test of whether media would focus on political content or celebrity dissing, and drew public reactions from Manson, Beck and Zac Hanson. [1] Joni Mitchell, who appeared to Alexander in a dream that inspired the song, later praised it in her 2004 compilation liner notes as rising 'from the swamp of McMusic like a flower of hope,' while U2's the Edge called it the song he was 'most jealous of.' [2] New Radicals reunited for the first time in 22 years to perform the song at Joe Biden's 2021 inauguration, honoring Beau Biden, for whom the song had been a favorite. [3]
