The song was written after Johanna Hall was asked why someone couldn't write a song about staying together instead of breaking up, and John Hall reportedly wrote the music in about fifteen minutes. [1] It was used by ABC in 1977 and again in 1979-80 to promote its television season when the network was the highest rated in the country, and versions were later used in Burger King commercials. [2] A version of the song's chorus was sung at the 2008 Democratic National Convention following Senator Ted Kennedy's speech. [3]
