Paul McCartney said the song's meaning has defied all attempts at decryption, having named it after either a family Labrador puppy or a pony he once owned, while lyrically it morphed into being about meeting Linda's intimidating father. [1] Dave Marsh named it number 793 in his list of the 1001 greatest singles ever made, calling it a 'grand pop confection' and the closest McCartney came to the 'drive and density' of his Beatles work. [2] Karen and Richard Carpenter personally called McCartney to tell him what a great record it was. [3]
