Kiedis wrote the song about former bandmate Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. [1] It spent 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, one of the longest runs ever at the top of that chart. [2] It has stayed a constant staple on the band's tours since 1999, among their ten most performed songs. [3]
