Kevin Cronin wrote the song after learning his wife had cheated on him, and it became REO Speedwagon's first single to break the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, hitting number one. [1] The song was nearly left off the album's single lineup after Epic Records doubted it, until the band persuaded them to release it. [2] Its arrangement was shaped when guitarist Gary Richrath spontaneously added power chords on his Les Paul to what Cronin had written as a piano ballad, transforming it into a power ballad. [3]
