Marx wrote the song as a love letter to his then-wife, actress Cynthia Rhodes, while she was filming in South Africa. [1] It was originally offered to Barbra Streisand, who turned it down because she said she would not be right here waiting for anyone. [2] It became Marx's third consecutive number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and his best-selling single after going platinum. [3]
