Ester Dean wrote the song's suggestive lyrics after recalling the phrase 'sticks and stones may break my bones' and twisting it into 'but chains and whips excite me.' [1] The song's music video, directed by Melina Matsoukas, was banned in eleven countries and restricted from daytime broadcast in France due to its sadomasochistic and sexual content. [2] A remix featuring Britney Spears helped push the song to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Rihanna's tenth number-one single and Spears' fifth. [3]
