It became the last US number-one Billboard Hot 100 hit of the 1970s, then returned to number one the following week in 1980, making it the first pop song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart in two different decades. [1] The song's memorable chorus line was written on the spot when Holmes swapped out a planned Humphrey Bogart reference for 'piña coladas' at the last minute during recording. [2]
