It was written and produced by Chic's Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, who originally intended the song for Chic itself before giving it to Sister Sledge. [1] The recording was later sampled by Will Smith for his 1997 number one hit "Gettin' Jiggy wit It." [2] Nile Rodgers has speculated that its lyric mentioning Halston, Gucci and Fiorucci may have been the first instance of brand name-dropping in a song. [3]
