Momentum

This song has not appeared on a Rotation chart, so it has no score and no receipts. The rank history below is the ledger; a score is only published once the momentum run puts it on a chart.

Why it's here

Seven top studio session guitarists, including Robben Ford and Larry Carlton, attempted the guitar solo before Jay Graydon's take became the keeper, after Fagen redirected him from a jazz-pop approach toward a blues feel over the changing chords. [1] The track features Michael McDonald's multi-tracked backup vocals in the choruses and Paul Griffin's improvised talking and background vocals in the final chorus and fadeout. [2] The song was heavily sampled on De La Soul's 1989 track "Eye Know." [3]

In culture

Every place this record has lived. A solid chip states a fact and carries the citation that earns it; a dashed one is a connection somebody drew, and carries their name instead.
