Stills wrote the song after Billy Preston's frequent remark, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with," which Stills asked to use as the title line. [1] The recording features background vocals from Stills's Crosby, Stills & Nash bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash, along with Rita Coolidge, Priscilla Jones, and John Sebastian. [2] It became Stephen Stills's biggest hit single as a solo artist. [3]
