Winwood's "Valerie" flopped on first release in 1982 (No. 51 UK, No. 70 US) but the 1987 Tom Lord-Alge remix issued via the compilation Chronicles reached No. 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 19 in the UK, which is the version that carries the song's catalogue standing today. [1] The track's ongoing dance-floor life comes from Eric Prydz's 2004 house record "Call on Me," which is built on a sample of "Valerie" with re-recorded Winwood vocals and spent five weeks at No. 1 on the UK singles chart. [2] Prydz revived that link on 15 March 2025, performing "Call on Me" for the first time in 20 years at his "20 Years of Prydz" show in Austin, Texas. [3]
