The song was written by Robbie Robertson after he noticed his 1951 Martin D-28 guitar was stamped as manufactured in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and began crafting the lyrics from there. [1] It was ranked No. 41 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and named one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. [2] The recording was used in the 1969 film Easy Rider, and has since appeared in films including Girl, Interrupted, Starsky and Hutch, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The King of Staten Island. [3]
