The band recorded the song's multiple vocal parts more times and took longer than any other track on Pet Sounds, as Brian Wilson pushed for a nearly impossible perfection. [1] The instrumental backing was played live in one continuous take with no overdubs, featuring a 12-string mando-guitar plugged directly into the console and two accordions playing in unison to create an unusual, ringing timbre. [2] It was ranked number seven on Pitchfork's list of the 200 Best Songs of the 1960s and number 297 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. [3]
