The song's unusual DADAAD guitar tuning, stumbled upon by accident, was so unconventional that Pete Townshend once called Dave Wakeling to ask how to play it, having been stumped alongside David Gilmour. [1] The song's title carries a schoolboy double entendre—a play on 'save it, fellator'—that gives its coming-of-age lyrics a hidden joke. [2] It has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including Kingpin, Big Daddy, Funny People, Hot Tub Time Machine, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Once Upon a Time. [3]

"Save It for Later" is built on the unusual DADAAD guitar tuning that Dave Wakeling stumbled into while trying to tune to DADGAD to play along with John Martyn in the late 1970s. [1] The tuning was singular enough that The Who's Pete Townshend telephoned Wakeling to ask how to play the song, and Townshend went on to record his own version on Deep End Live! in 1986. [2] The recording has been used across films from Kingpin (1996) to Big Daddy (1999), Funny People (2009), and Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), and decades later Eddie Vedder covered it for The Bear's third season. [3]
