The track features a sitar part played by George Harrison that marked the first appearance of the Indian string instrument on a Western rock recording. [1] The song was influential in the development of raga rock and psychedelic rock and helped elevate Ravi Shankar and Indian classical music to mainstream popularity in the West. [2] An early, musically distinct take titled "This Bird Has Flown," recorded on 12 October 1965, was ultimately scrapped by the band and later released on the 1996 compilation Anthology 2. [3]
