Drummer Topper Headon wrote and recorded the drum, piano and bass parts himself in the studio, making the song's origin unusual among Clash tracks, which typically began with the Strummer-Jones songwriting partnership. [1] The song reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's only US top 10 single, and also hit number eight on the dance chart. [2] Armed Forces Radio chose it as the first song broadcast on the service covering the area during Operation Desert Storm. [3]
