The song grew out of an ad-libbed onstage jam that Tom Johnston initially dismissed as a bar song without much merit until producer Ted Templeman convinced him to write lyrics for it. [1] It features Johnston on lead vocal, rhythm guitar, and a harmonica solo, backed by Patrick Simmons, Tiran Porter, John Hartman, and Michael Hossack. [2] Ultimate Classic Rock ranked it the Doobie Brothers' second-greatest song for its guitar riff, while Billboard's staff placed it sixth-best, highlighting how the punchy guitars contrast with the jammy polyrhythms of the bass and drums. [3]
