The song broke out in the key markets of Philadelphia and Detroit before rising up the charts, and Billboard ranked it the No. 21 song of 1970. [1] It became the Five Stairsteps' only pop Top 40 hit and their last R&B top 40 hit until 1976, going on to become the group's signature song that inspired more than twenty covers. [2] The song is ranked #402 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. [3]
