The Kingsmen's version peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, spent 16 weeks on the chart, and sold a million copies by April 1964. [1] Its shambolic, out-of-tune sound and Jack Ely's slurred vocals have led critics to call it the Rosetta Stone of garage rock and the ur-text of punk, with Dave Marsh ranking it No. 11 out of the 1001 greatest singles ever made. [2] Rumors that the mumbled lyrics concealed obscene content got the song banned on many radio stations and triggered a 31-month FBI investigation. [3]
