The Turtles recorded the song at Sunset Sound, the studio also used by emerging artists like the Doors, with bassist Chip Douglas arranging the horns and backing vocals for the track. [1] The song's structure is praised for one of the most effective minor-to-major key switches, moving from F-sharp minor verses to F-sharp major choruses via a Picardy third outro. [2] In 1999 BMI named it the 44th most-performed song in the United States of the 20th century with about five million American radio performances, and in 2007 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. [3]
