Chapman's surprise mid-set performance of the song at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert, filling in after Stevie Wonder's equipment failed, drove the single into the US top ten and pushed her debut album to number one. [1] The song won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1989, after also being nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. [2] Rolling Stone ranked it number 71 on its 2021 updated list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and it was Chapman's only entry on the original 2004 list. [3]
