Why it's here

The song was written by Wonder as part of an agreement to give guitarist Jeff Beck a song, after learning Beck admired his music, and the two improvised the riff and beat together in the studio. [1] It gave Wonder his first number-one Billboard Hot 100 single since "Fingertips, Pt. 2" in 1963, and earned him two Grammy Awards for Best Rhythm & Blues Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. [2] The clavinet riff, played by Wonder himself on a Hohner Clavinet model C, has been singled out as one of his most memorable uses of the minor pentatonic scale. [3]

Every place this record has lived. A solid chip states a fact and carries the citation that earns it; a dashed one is a connection somebody drew, and carries their name instead.

Every date here is the date the source chart covers, never the date we fetched it. Sources publish on different lags: the Spotify mirror runs about two days behind, TurnTable publishes weekly. One recording, one history: this table also counts the rows sources published under 1 other handle of this record (remasters, official videos).
