Okay, fall is the best season, and I will not be taking questions.

There’s a morning, always right around the first of October, when you step outside and the air has changed its mind. It’s crisp, and it smells like wet leaves and a fireplace three streets over, plus the faint cinnamon of a pumpkin spice latte I am absolutely ordering. And yes, I will be judged, and no, I don’t care.

It’s sweater weather, which around here counts as a personality. The trees go full Technicolor: red and rust, with that one maple on the corner turning a gold so loud it should need a permit.

And October is when the Fall Classic is on. Fine, that’s the World Series. We’re borrowing the name. Sixty songs across seven sides that climb and come back down, so you can play it from start to finish while you rake, pretend to rake, or drink coffee near a rake.

It starts with Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing,” goes back to school with Saves the Day and Fall Out Boy, gets dark by six, finds a second wind in “Float On,” and turns the lamps on for “The Great Pumpkin Waltz.” The globe flies to where every record is from, seven countries in all: Nick Drake was born in Rangoon, Nico in Cologne, and Soul for Real are from Wyandanch, Long Island.
